NOT YET TAKING APPLICATIONS – NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

NEW INTAKE 10/14/2026: Zermatt - male - approx 4 years old - 7.1 pounds - Maltese

Reason for intake: We took in six dogs from animal control after they were seized due to neglect. Zermatt was the worst of the dogs. They all had ear mites, but it was crazy the amount of hair, gunk and ear mite funk we pulled out of Zermatt's ears! As we were plucking, his little back legs were trying to scratch. It must have felt SO GOOD! It's surprising none of them had infected ears but thank goodness they didn't. Zermatt must have also been loaded with fleas because upon separating his hair, there wasn't a spot that didn't have flea dirt. (Animal control dosed him a Capstar to get rid of the live fleas immediately.) Anyway, they are all going to our groomer and the vet to get everything they need and then we'll post them for adoption. We may be getting more from this situation and we'll post if and when we do.

NOT TAKING APPLICATIONS: Many dogs, particularly breeder, hoarder or senior dogs, can have multiple medical issues that need addressed. Additionally, sometimes we take in young puppies requiring multiple vaccinations and/or quarantining. In this particular case, we are not yet taking applications either due to age or possible illness or some other reason. We will post when s(he) is ready for adoption. In the interest of fairness, EARLY application submissions will NOT be considered. Please note… we cannot respond to messages/emails, etc., on dogs that are NOT yet available for adoption. Please wait until the dog is available for adoption. We will post him or her on Facebook in our Adoptable Dog Album pinned to the top of our page which you can follow at this link: https://www.facebook.com/share/1B46skRWF5/ OR you can keep checking our website at www.roadtorescuela.org. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

Note: Only those with a responsible dog ownership history and excellent vet reference need apply.

INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY:
PLEASE read profile thoroughly BEFORE applying:
DOG APPLICATION LINK:

RESERVING A PUPPY: If your application is approved, you will be contacted by phone. Specific puppies are only reserved with a $100 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit once the approved adopter is notified.

James Avery (male)
Breed: Chihuahua
DOB: 6/17/2026
Current weight: 2.65 pounds
Size potential: Mother, Tilly Sue (since adopted), is 7.6 pounds. His father, who we believe is Milo (since adopted), was 4.14 pounds. There were several unaltered male Chihuahuas in the home but all were small. Milo being the father is a guess. We suspect James Avery will be somewhere between those two weights fully grown.

Adoption fee and vetting: $350, which comes with $50 spay/neuter REBATE coupon redeemable once puppy is spayed/neutered no later than 6 months of age; includes all puppy shots, plus Bordetella, Lepto and rabies; deworming; microchipped

Benefactor Dog/Puppy: When we have a popular dog or puppy, we dub them a “Benefactor Dog”. A Benefactor Dog will have an above average adoption fee. In other words, for OTHER dogs where the adoption fee is minimal or waived due to age, health or some other reason (although we’ve likely spent hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars) a Benefactor dog will help us somewhat make up the shortfall. If this dog has an above-average adoption fee, she/he is a Benefactor Dog.

Good with other dogs: yes
Cats: yes

Health issues: IMPORTANT! POTENTIAL GLUCOSE ISSUES DUE TO TINY SIZE!!

Sweet & Steady Needed!
James Avery requires a little extra attentive care due to potential glucose (blood sugar) fluctuations. He needs a dedicated PERSON who can maintain a strict, CONSISTENT feeding schedule and recognize the subtle signs of low blood sugar, such as lethargy, wobbliness, or sudden sleepiness. His
future family should keep a high-calorie supplement like

Nutri-Cal

on hand for a quick, reliable energy boost if his blood sugar dips.
With REGULAR, CONSISTENT meals, a watchful eye, and a little extra love, this sweet pup will thrive and live a completely happy, playful life.

Biography: PLEASE keep in mind your AGE! Despite what you may want, we want YOU to outlive the pup… not the other way around! Puppies (especially small-breed) can live 15-20 years!

James Avery was born to Tilly Sue on June 17th, 2026, in the watchful foster home of Michele, one of our long-time volunteers and board members. Tilly Sue came to us with three other Chihuahuas from animal control. There were eight all-together, four of which went to another rescue. Two came to us pregnant. Once Tilly Sue delivered her puppies, we suspected immediately that Milo was the daddy, since all but one were white with brown spots (a little mixture of Tilly Sue and Milo we suspect). James Avery's foster mom reports that he's playful, fun, curious, entertaining and all puppy! As you can see from the video, he doesn't let his tiny size get in the way of a good time! James Avery needs a home where he'll be monitored to make sure he is eating well, who does not have a lot of other distractions to keep them from monitoring him, who has the means to involve a veterinarian should the need arise, etc. Tiny puppies like James Avery need extra attention and monitoring until they get out of the puppy stage. Even as an adult, they can have blood sugar issues, so keeping Nutri-Cal on hand is so important. There are other options, but Nutri-Cal is our go-to. If you think you have the means, the time, the love and the ability to care for him and make him part of your happy family, we welcome your application!

SPAY/NEUTER REBATE PROGRAM: Due to the age of this pet, he/she may not be spayed/neutered at the time of adoption. If this is the case, you will receive a $50 rebate coupon which will entitle you to a rebate of $50 once your pet is spayed/neutered and valid ONLY IF DONE ON OR BEFORE 6 MONTHS OF AGE! It is REQUIRED and part of our adoption contract that all unaltered pets be spayed/neutered no later than 6 months of age and we DO follow up!

PUPPIES!
Keep in mind, puppies teeth just like human babies and have little sharp toenails. They will also have behaviors that require training. Puppies will cry, chew, bite, mouth, nip, bark, destroy, dig, scratch, etc. The puppy phase lasts about 18 months (sometimes longer), so be sure you ARE READY for the commitment! Don't even think about applying if you have any doubts about raising a puppy... and don't expect children to take care of the puppy... because they won't! This needs to be an adult decision and an adult commitment.

POTTY TRAINING: A puppy can only hold their bladder for a short period of time based upon their age. If the puppy is 2 months old, they can hold their bladder for 2 hours; 3 months/3 hours; 4 months/ 4 hours, etc., up to 6 months of age. At about 6 months of age, this time frame stables out. Puppies are a 10-15 year commitment (sometimes longer). Please be sure you are prepared for the life of the puppy! In conclusion, if your puppy is in a responsible home that provides daily structure, training and socialization with people and other pets, your puppy will grow to be a well-adjusted and wonderful part of your family for many years to come.

COMMITMENT: Puppies are a 10-15 year commitment (sometimes longer). Please be sure you are prepared for the life of the puppy! Bear in mind your AGE! While life is never guaranteed, we want the odds to be that YOU outlive the puppy, not the other way around.

In conclusion, if your puppy is in a responsible home that provides daily structure, training and socialization with people and other pets, your puppy will grow to be a well-adjusted and wonderful part of your family for many years to come.

**IMPORTANT NOTES**
*We do adopt out of state provided the adopter is willing and able to travel to us once approved. We do not ship or transport our animals and there is no exception to this rule.

*All of our adoptable dogs are small, and they are never to be left outside alone, ever! We only rehome our dogs to adopters that plan to have them as inside dogs and part of the family! We do allow adopters with doggie doors, provided there is SECURE fencing. There is no exception to this rule!

*NO SMALL CHILDREN!! As with almost all the dogs at NR2R, young children or a very active household is not recommended. Many of our dogs come to us BECAUSE of small children, thus we do not rehome our dogs to homes with babies or young children. KEEP THIS IN MIND IF YOU HAVE VISITING GRANDCHILDREN AS WELL! Even if the children are older, it would depend on the child AND the parent or parents.

*HOUSETRAINING: We do NOT guarantee that any of our adoptable dogs are housetrained. While most should be easily trained, keep in mind that they live in a rescue where they have access to the outdoors all day and are inside at night. Even if they were surrendered to us as housetrained, it doesn’t mean they will automatically be housetrained in your home. Housetraining them should be easy in the right home with time, patience, and consistency.

*We do not guarantee the age, health or temperament of any of the dogs we rehome. Many of the dogs we take in come from animal control and rarely do we have histories and even when we do, many times the histories are inaccurate.

*Only adopters with a responsible dog ownership history and excellent vet reference need apply. If you bring this pet into your heart and home, you will receive in return many years of love, companionship, and loyalty. That’s our guarantee.

Other notes: This pet is available for adoption through Ninna’s Road to Rescue, Benton, La. We are 501c3 non-profit organization. Our mission is to rescue primarily small-breed dogs and to re-home them into RESPONSIBLE and CARING forever homes. DOG APPLICATION LINK:

Biography: PLEASE keep in mind your AGE! Despite what you may want, we want YOU to outlive the pup… not the other way around! Puppies (especially small-breed) can live 15-20 years!
Mary Frances was born to Tilly Sue who came to us from the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter. Tilly Sue was one of eight Chihuahuas taken in by OPAS due to an eviction. We took in four of the dogs and the other four went to a different rescue. Tilly Sue and Uma Tee were both pregnant... and delivered a week apart. Tilly Sue was an excellent mother and not only raised her four pups, but took on Uma Tee's lone surviving pup, Tutee after she was tube-fed and bottle fed for a few weeks to gain her strength. Mary Frances is the sweetest little girl. She's playful and fun and is all Chihuahua puppy to include the CHIHUAHUA SHAKES! Right now, Mary Frances is the only puppy of Tilly Sue's pups available for adoption. She will be popular so if you're interested, you'll want to get your application in quickly. Due to her size, she will need to go to the right home. If you think you are the right home, we welcome your application.

VACCINATIONS and PROTECTING YOUR PUPPY!
Your puppy has NOT been fully vaccinated! While with us, your puppy has been completely protected the entire time. Your puppy has not been outside of their protective puppy pen except to clean. IF your puppy got two (or more) rounds of vaccinations before leaving, then your puppy was released to be with the other non-quarantined dogs. It’s important to keep your puppy away from high-traffic stores or areas where there is a potential that there are unvaccinated dogs or areas where you know there were puppies that have had or have parvo. Parvo is a silent killer and is everywhere... so just like you would a newborn human baby... protect your puppy. Your puppy will require MORE vaccinations which will be discussed at the time of adoption. YOU MUST FOLLOW-UP WITH YOUR VET TO GET YOUR PUPPY ON A SCHEDULE! Parvo is everywhere and IT IS A KILLER OF PUPPIES! You WILL be required to SIGN a contract that you agree to continue the puppy vaccinations until your puppy has been fully inoculated. Be aware… we will follow-up!

WHY SO MANY VACCINATIONS? Most people don’t understand why a puppy needs multiple puppy vaccinations so some people don’t go beyond the first set. This is a HUGE MISTAKE. We’ll explain: In the beginning, while nursing, the puppy receives ample immunity from their mother. Once weaned, they are susceptible to dangerous viruses such as parvo, the puppy killer, and distemper… among other things. At 6 weeks they should receive their first round of puppy vaccinations. Why isn’t this enough? Because you don’t know when the mother’s immunity is no longer effective and if they receive it while still with the mother’s immunity, it doesn’t do any good. This is WHY they need to continue with boosters. At some point one or more of those vaccinations will become their immunity. Don’t risk your puppy’s life! While some vets only do three sets, we recommend four sets. If you’ve ever had a puppy die of parvo… it is something you will never ever forget. (Keep in mind we are not veterinarians and cannot give advice, so don’t take our word for it… talk to your licensed veterinarian.)

Banyon (male)

Intake date: 5/30/2026

Chihuahua

8 years old

Intake weight: 6.8 pounds

Adoption fee: $170, which includes vetting, microchip

Good with other dogs: yes

Cats: unknown – we do not have cats to be able to test

Vetting and other: altered (neutered), bilateral cherry eyes corrected, up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccinations, heartworm negative, fecal negative, on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention, microchipped

Health issues: none observed.

Temperament: very sweet, VERY social, VERY friendly - fits right into the pack

Energy level: low-medium

Groom needs: low maintenance

Biography: Banyan came in with Linen, his daughter, from animal control. You may remember a couple of weeks ago, we took in Sabrinabelle and Falina from animal control. Well, Linen is Falina's daughter... and both she and Banyan were surrendered to animal control just a few days ago. Hopefully, that is the last from that home. Banyan is a man about town! He loves everyone and everyone loves him. He does fine in a kennel if needed but really doesn't understand a leash. You do need to watch when feeding him treats because as you can see, he swallowed them whole! He probably should get treats that are broken up a bit. Anyway, he is so precious and is ready for his furever home!

**WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW**

*We do adopt out of state provided the adopter is willing and able to travel to us once approved. We do not ship or transport our animals and there is no exception to this rule.

*Most of our adoptable dogs are small, and they are never to be left outside alone, ever! We only rehome our dogs to adopters that plan to have them as inside dogs and part of the family! We do allow adopters with doggie doors, provided there is SECURE fencing and the dog is over 15 pounds. There is no exception to this rule!

*PREDATORS: IF THIS DOG IS UNDER 10 POUNDS, the dog is to be monitored and protected when outside at all times! PREDATOR-THREAT IS A REAL DANGER! For example, a hawk tried to pick up a Chihuahua owned by a friend visiting Ninna’s house… RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE VISITOR. Thankfully the visitor was watching the dog and the hawk was wrestled off of the Chihuahua but it did require an ER visit and she is was very lucky to survive. TAKE IT SERIOUSLY!

Housetraining them should be easy in the right home with time, patience, and consistency.

*KENNELING: We always recommend kenneling when you cannot supervise your dog. This helps with housetraining and any destructive tendencies until you get to know your new addition.

*We do not guarantee the age, health or temperament of any of the dogs we rehome. Many of the dogs we take in come from animal control and rarely do we have histories and even when we do, many times the histories are inaccurate.
